An Overview of the Iraqi University of Sciences
The Iraqi University of Sciences was established in 1994 at the request of the Association of Economists under the name "Baghdad College of Economic Sciences University." Approval for its establishment was granted by decree numbered (dated 17/1/1994) under the same name. It ranks amongst the oldest private colleges in Iraq, being sixth in order of establishment among 108 private universities and colleges.
According to its internal regulations, a College Council was established to oversee academic and administrative affairs, chaired by the Dean and including Vice-Deans, Heads of Departments, a representative of the academic staff, and a representative of the founding body.
In the academic year 1996–1997, studies commenced in only three departments: the Department of Commerce (currently Business Administration), the Department of Economics, and the Department of Computer Sciences.
Comprising several departments and branches, the university opened its doors to students in 1996–1997. Many teachers and students joined, with numbers exceeding 160 male and female students.
In the academic year 1998, the Department of Banking and Financial Sciences was established, followed by the Department of Accounting in 2002, and the Department of Computer Technology Engineering in 2004. The college has since expanded its infrastructure, academic departments, and student numbers accordingly. Thus, it evolved into a university, and consequently twelve faculties were established:
1. College of Dentistry
2. College of Pharmacy
3. College of Engineering
4. College of Sciences
5. College of Technical Engineering
6. College of Law
7. College of Administration and Economics
8. College of Physical Education and Sports Sciences
9. College of Health and Medical Technologies
10. College of Fine Arts
11. College of Education
12. College of Arts
With the provision of all necessary material and human resources, this development was accompanied by the opening of additional academic departments within its colleges. The university also equipped its laboratories with the latest advanced technological devices to meet the needs of students and society in academic and scientific fields.
The college has also provided spacious, air-conditioned classrooms equipped with the latest teaching aids, and an exemplary library—both print and electronic—that meets students' needs for all study requirements, as well as those of academic staff for references, books, and periodicals.
The Iraqi University of Sciences is distinguished by its academic rigour and esteemed reputation. Since its establishment, it has graduated numerous generations. Most of its alumni have assumed prestigious positions in government institutions.
Throughout its academic journey, the college has managed to achieved a notable proportion of its objectives and scientific accomplishments. Chief amongst these is attracting outstanding academic talent with expertise gained through training and administrative work.
The college holds an annual scientific conference in addition to specialised seminars organised by each of its academic departments, with participation from many researchers both within and outside the college. The number of international and local scientific conferences has reached approximately nineteen, held under the patronage of His Excellency the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research.
The college also distinguishes itself through its three journal publications in engineering, applied, and economic sciences:
Baghdad International Journal of Applied Sciences (BIJAS)
Baghdad International Journal of Engineering (BIJE)
Journal of Baghdad College of Economic Sciences
Published twice annually, these journals serve most universities and colleges inside and outside Iraq, featuring research contributions from lecturers and researchers both within Iraq and internationally.
The university's strategy today is founded upon contributing to educational improvement; developing and building students' personality, instilling sound values; unleashing latent potential at all levels; and helping to build society whilst guiding it towards the correct path in order to keep pace with developments, respond to their implications across different aspects of life, and harness them for comprehensive social development in various fields.
